The Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has defended the withdrawal of security personnel’s assigned to a section of politicians in the country saying it’s a normal exercise that’s done by the National Police Service.
Last week Jubilee Politicians that includes; Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu,Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwah and Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika their bodyguards were withdrawn. Those close to them claimed that their securities were withdrawn following their support to Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential bid come 2022.
Matiangi who spoke during an interview with NTV on Monday night refuted the claims and cautioned politicians from making remarks that some individuals were being targeted’’ The remarks with no facts have let this public figures to attack me and Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho while it’s the normal duty’’ said Matiangi.
He said Cabinet Secretary or Permanent Secretaries they do not assign police constables responsibilities saying the exercise started long time ago.
The CS added that the exercise has even affected some Cabinet Secretaries and other senior government officials.
Matiangi said the ongoing police reforms will see some Administration Police officers adopted to offer bodyguard services. He said out of 100,000 members of the police service, about 10,000 are deployed to offer VIP protection.
He further said that some 13,000 rounds of ammunition and more than 700 guns that had been illegally acquired have been confiscated in the ongoing vetting of civilian firearms holders by the Firearms and Licensing Board. Matiangi said the ongoing vetting has exposed massive rot that has been attributed to corruption.
